East Antrim MLA Alastair Ross has welcomed the announcement from Environment Minister, Edwin Poots, that the Carrickfergus salt mine will be extended. Commenting on the announcement, Mr Ross said,
“I visited Carrickfergus salt mine during the summer and saw for myself the fantastic work of those involved in the mine. Even at that stage they were doing their preparation work, which was well under way, for the winter period and I was impressed at how much work and commitment was displayed by the staff.
To have planning approval now granted by the Department of the Environment is great news not just to Irish Salt Mining and Exploration (ISME) but this decision will benefit all of Northern Ireland, and beyond, as this mine is only one of three in the United Kingdom, supplying salt both nationally and internationally.
With this extension to the mine, it is stated that there will be enough salt to provide grit for the next 30 years. It has come just in time as the current mine was due to hit its lowest salt levels in the next few years.
My congratulations go to all those involved at ISME and I look forward to seeing the extension go ahead securing further employment and highlighting the significant niche that exists in Northern Ireland blending resources and innovative management to create a supply and distribution network which has been particularly needed this winter and now can continue its work for many years to come.”
