In 2003,we were entrusted with the mantle of political leadership. The position
that the DUP inherited from the Ulster Unionists was catastrophic. Unionists were
demoralised, the RUC destroyed, terrorists had been given early release, and their
political representatives put into government.
We have offered positive strong leadership. We
have negotiated changes to the Belfast Agreement,
made it a requirement that no party can get into
government without prior full decommissioning and
an end to all paramilitary and criminal activity, and
ensured proper ministerial accountability.We have
secured a Victim's Commissioner and achieved
de-rating of Orange Halls. As a result of our actions,
nationalism is divided for the first time in years
and Sinn Fein are isolated and under pressure.
We have started to regain ground for Unionism.
However, these gains are under threat. Republicanism
and many in Government hope to see an end to DUP
leadership, and a return to the days of weak unionist
leadership, which would be pressurised into making
new concessions. I seek your support in this election
to continue the fight back for Unionism and deliver
a fair deal for all in Northern Ireland. Only the DUP
can stop a return to the days of push over Unionism.
Only the DUP can stop Sinn Fein becoming the
largest party in Northern Ireland.
Of course, this election is not just about the wider
political picture. It is about representing people as
effectively as possible. As someone who has lived all
my life in North Down, I know the problems that
people face on a day to day basis. I have always
striven to be a grassroots politician, and if elected I
would aspire to follow in the footsteps of the best
MP that North Down ever had, Sir James Kilfedder.
Having been involved in politics for the last 18 years,
and a public representative for the last nine, I can
offer the necessary experience and energy that the
people of North Down deserve.
I ask for your trust and support on
polling day. My record shows I will
not let you down.
