DUP 2007 POLICY PAPERS |

Securing a Financial Package:
In 1998 when the Belfast Agreement was being negotiated the crucial issue of a financial package was ignored. For the first few years of the labour Government this was obscured because of the significantly higher levels of public spending in the United Kingdom. However, now Northern Ireland is having to contend with the legacy of this oversight.
Northern Ireland suffers from the legacy of the troubles and a generation of underinvestment. If we are to create the most economically successful region possible we will need some assistance from the Government to get the process underway.
The DUP was the first party to raise the issue of a financial package. It is also the only party to make resolution of a satisfactory package a precondition of the return of devolution.
